Wassily Wassilyevich Kandinsky (December 4, 1866 – December 13, 1944) was an important Russian painter and art theorist. He is credited with painting the first purely abstract works.

Lesson Overview:

In this project you will review the difference between ABSTRACT and REALISTIC artwork. You will also learn about the work of the great Russian artist Wassily Kandinsky. You may complete this assignment using one of the following media:

1. Digital Graphics (GIMP)

2. Oil pastels

3. Watercolor

Using any one of the above media, you will create your own Kandinsky inspired artwork.

Learning Objectives:

Students will be able to…

  • Review the difference between ABSTRACT and REALISTIC artwork.

  • Study the artworks of Wassily Kandinsky.

  • Learn about the Elements of Art and Principles of Design and identify them in artwork.

  • Create an abstract artwork.

Materials:

  • 9″x12″ white paper

  • pencil

  • water colors

  • templates (circle, triangles, etc.)

  • ruler

  • computer

  • samples of Kandinsky’s artwork

  • instruction sheet (see below)

Lesson Steps:

1. Review the Kandinsky Powerpoint and discuss the difference between Abstract and Realistic artwork.

2. Discuss Kandinsky’s work and his use of color, shape, line, pattern and repetition. Find examples of the Elements of Art in his artwork.

3. Follow the Instruction Sheet to complete your assignment.
