1. What were the philosophical roots of the Declaration of Independence? What effect did the Declaration have on the struggle taking place in the colonies?

2. After reading the preamble to the Declaration of Independence (first two paragraphs) write down any influences of the “Enlightenment” that you may come across.

3. Do you think that the words, “all men are created equal” were intended to apply to all human begins? Explain.

4. Part two of the Declaration of Independence is the list of grievances to the King. Select 3 of the grievances that you think are more important than others and explain why you chose them.

5. What does the third and final part of the Declaration (last two paragraphs) essentially state?

6. Do you see any evidence in the Declaration that the colonists had already unsuccessfully voiced concerns to the King? Explain.

7. What impact did the Declaration of Independence have on others around the world? In particular the French and many British subjects?

8. Why could you argue that the Declaration of Independence signifies the birth of our nation?
