Color: Warm and Cool Colors

This is a color wheel.

Basic Primary-Secondary CW

It shows the pure colors you see in the rainbow.

Rainbow colors are seen when light shines through the raindrops.

You can also see pure colors when light shines through a prism.

The colors of other objects are called pure or intense when they look like colors from a rainbow or prism.

Red, yellow and orange are called warm colors.

Warm colors often remind people of warm feelings or warm things such as the sun or fire.

Blue, green and violet are called cool colors.

Cool colors often remind people of cool feelings or cool things such as water and ice. There are many other families of colors.

Emily Carr created many paintings about the great forests of Western Canada. In her painting Reforestation, she used many cool colors.  The cool colors help you see and imagine the coolness of the forest.

Notice how the artist mixed green with blue, violet and yellow. What other colors do you see?

Georgia O’Keeffe used many warm colors and her painting about the mountains in New Mexico. The warm colors help you see and imagine the red earth and heat in the sunbaked desert. What other colors did the artist use? What kind of picture could you draw with warm or cool colors?

  2. SKETCH OUT YOUR IDEA WITH A STYLUS.

  3. CHOOSE EITHER WARM OR COOL COLORS TO START COLORING IN YOUR SKETCH.

  4. NEXT USE THE COLOR WHEEL TOOL, BLEND YOUR COLORS WITH THE NEUTRAL COLORS TO MAKE COLORS THAT ARE “DARKISH”, “LIGHTISH”, “BROWNISH” OR “GRAYISH”.

  5. SAVE YOUR DESIGN TO YOUR PHOTO LIBRARY AND UPLOAD TO SEESAW AND ARTSONIA.

EXTENSIONS:

DRAWING: Use chalk to make a drawing using either the warm OR cool colors, plus neutrals.

THE PICTURE SHOULD BE DOMINATED BY MANY WARM OR MANY COOL COLORS, NOT BOTH.

Fill the entire page. Use the sides as well as the points of your chalk.

mix or blend together THE CHALK to create many related colors.

  • Gently blend the colors by rubbing with fingers or paper towels.

  • (or use your airbrush tool on iPAD)

Remember your picture should be dominated by either warm or cool colors.
