Day 1: The Elements of Art- Color

Drawing the Color Wheel

  • I am familiar with the Elements of Art

  • I understand that an artist uses the Elements of Art in their artwork.

  • I know what Color is.

  • I know what the 3 properties of color are.

  • I can recognize several of the new vocabulary words that have to do with color theory: primary, secondary, warm, cool, complementary.

  • I can follow along with directions to draw a color wheel.

Day 2: Painting the Color Wheel

  • I can identify the primary colors.

  • I can use my paint brush to neatly paint the primary colors.

  • I can identify the secondary colors.

  • I can mix the secondary colors using two primary colors.

  • I can use my paintbrush to neatly paint the secondary colors.

  • I know how to use my paintbrush the right way and can rinse & dry in-between colors so that I keep the primary colors clean, without contaminating them.

COLOR

Color is one of the Elements of Art.

Color has three properties…

  • Hue… what is the color name? (red, yellow, blue, etc.)

  • Intensity… how strong is the color? (is it very bright or dull?)

  • Value… how light or dark is the color?

A COLOR WHEEL is a color model or a way of organizing colors to help an artist with color choices and color mixing.

Primary Colors: Red, Yellow, Blue

Secondary Colors: Orange, Green, Violet (Purple)

Warm Colors: Red, Yellow, Orange

Cool Colors: Blue, Violet (Purple), Green

Complementary colors: are pairs of colors that are of “opposite” hue in some color model.

In color theory, two colors are called complementary if, when mixed in the proper proportion, they produce a neutral color (grey, white, or black).
