Sculpture: Imaginary Creatures

Today you will make a clay sculpture of an animal.

Have you ever seen animals like these?

Look carefully.

Do these animals show real or make believe animals?

This clay sculpture is very old.

It is from Central Asia.

This Mexican sculpture was made long ago.

It is covered with a mosaic of tiny shells and colorful stones.

A MOSIAC IS a picture or pattern produced by arranging together small colored pieces of hard material, such as stone, tile, or glass.

Chinese Qilin a mythical creature said to be descended from a lion and a dragon. Penn Museum.

Early Chinese tombs and temples often featured pairs of qilin 麒麟.

These imaginary creatures protected the tomb from evil spirits.

These colossal guardian animals show the “spirit way” to the tombs.

These are all make-believe animals.

Find the strange or surprising parts of each sculpture.

People in many lands have made sculptures of imaginary animals.

Can you tell why?

  1. Think of a real or imaginary animal that you could make from clay.

  2. SKETCH OUT YOUR IDEA ON FREE DRAW PAPER OR YOUR iPad.

  3. sketch out all the different FORMS you need to build to make your animal. BE SURE TO INCLUDE A FRONT, SIDE AND TOP OR BOTTOM VIEW OF YOUR SCULPTURE.

  4. Make it surprising or scary. Use your imaginatioN!

  5. WORK ON YOUR PLAN AND HAVE IT READY FOR NEXT WEEK.
