Fiber Art: Weaving

A  fiber is a long, thin  material that is easy to bend.

Rope, thread and yarn are fibers.

Some artists use fibers to create art.

Some fiber artists are weavers.

Weaving is done in an over-and-under pattern.

The fabrics in your clothes are woven from many tiny threads.

Paper is also made from tiny threads.

In the weaving above, the fibers are thin strips of paper.

The artist cut two pieces of painted paper into narrow strips.

Then they wove the strips back together.

Today you will choose two magazine pictures and weave them together.

Find two pictures that you think fit together well.

Are they similar or different?

What do these pictures have in common?

1. Fold one picture in half.

Draw lines about 1″ (2.5 cm) apart.

Begin at the fold.

Cut the lines with scissors.

Do not cut all the way to the edge of the paper.

This will be your paper loom.

The vertical lines of the loom are known as the weave.

2. Draw lines 1″ (2.5 cm) apart on your second picture.

The horizontal lines are known as the weft.

3. Cut one strip at a time from your second picture.

Weave each strip into your paper loom.

Be sure to weave all of the strips in the same direction.
