US History – Muckraking, Reform, and the “Social Gospel”

Below is a quick 5 minute video on muckrakers of the late 1800s. This photostory includes a brief description of reporters, journalists, and novelists of the Progressive Era. These reporters reported the economic, political, and social injustices of Gilded Age America.

1. List several of the muckrakers mentioned in this video.

2. What types of “social injustices” did they write about?

The “Social Gospel” (summary) – use this site to answer the questions below.

1.  Where did the “Social Gospel” movement begin?  What was the “Social Gospel” movement?

2.  Follow the link for “Hitting the sawdust trail with Billy Sunday” (on the left).  Who was Billy Sunday?  What was the sawdust trail?

3.  Follow the link for “The Rams Horn…” (this was a very popular “social gospel” magazine).  Select a group of images by subject.  This will take you to a series of political cartoons to choose from based on that subject.  Select a cartoon to view and describe what is being shown.  Then tell me the message that is being conveyed in the cartoon.

The photostory below provides a brief biographical description of Jane Addams, who became the first American woman to win the Nobel Prize for her care of the Urban immigrant and poor.

Answer these questions that go along with the photostory above.

1.  Why was the political machine and city bosses so popular among immigrants?

2.  What was the Hull House?

3.  What types of things did Jane Addams do to improve life in the city?
