A collage is a picture made from cut paper.
The paper shapes are pasted on a background.
Sometimes other shapes, lines or textures are added.
A MONTAGE is a special kind of collage.
SO WHAT IS DIFFERENT ABOUT A MONTAGE FROM A REGULAR COLLAGE?
A COLLAGE IS A COMPOSITION OF MATERIALS AND OBJECTS PASTED OVER A SURFACE;
A MONTAGE IS A SINGLE COMPOSITION CREATED BY JUXTAPOSING A SERIES OF PIECES OF PAPER, PHOTOS OR OTHER MEDIA TO CREATE AN ARTISTIC IMAGE.
MONTAGE comes from the french word “monter” meaning “to mount“.
The artist pastes or glues the pictures together in a new way.
Romare Bearden‘s montage of a city street has shapes cut from many photographs.
The shapes are pasted down to create a new picture.
The artist has created many montages about people live in cities.

A montage can also be made from one photograph.
You can cut the photo into curved or straight shapes.
You can move the shapes apart, or up and down.
This montage was made from a large photograph of a mouth.
The small picture of the astronaut was pasted on top of the large photograph.
