There are many techniques for using pencils, crayons, and other art materials.

IN THIS PROJECT WE WILL CREATE AN ARTWORK USING AN ETCHING TECHNIQUE.

TODAY WE WILL USE THE APP AUTODESK SKETCHBOOK TO SIMULATE AN ETCHING TECHNIQUE.

1. FIRST OPEN THE SELF-SERVICE APP.

FIND AND DOWNLOAD AUTODESK SKETCHBOOK.

AFTER YOU INSTALL THE APP, REVIEW THE TUTORIAL TO SEE THE MAIN FEATURES.

2. CREATE A NEW SKETCH BY OPENING THE “MAIN MENU” ICON, THEN TAP “NEW SKETCH”.


SELECT WHAT SIZE SKETCH YOU WILL NEED FROM THE PRESETS.

3. USE THE PAINT BUCKET TOOL TO FILL THE FIRST LAYER WITH ANY COLOR OF YOUR CHOICE.

4. THEN ADD A NEW LAYER BY TAPPING THE PLUS SIGN ON THE TOP RIGHT.

USE THE PAINT BUCKET TOOL TO FILL THE SECOND LAYER WITH BLACK.

5. THEN SELECT THE ERASER TOOL AND USE MANY LINES AND PATTERNS TO SHOW TEXTURE.

RESIZE YOUR ERASER TO A SMALLER SIZE.

SHARE YOUR IMAGE.

SAVE AS FLATTENED IMAGE (PNG)

SAVE IMAGE TO YOUR photos.

*UPLOAD YOUR “ETCHING” TO SEESAW WHEN YOU ARE DONE.

ALTERNATE DIRECTIONS FOR USE WITH SCRATCH ART PAPER:

TODAY we will be using some special materials called Scratch Art Paper and a wooden etching tool.

  1. Create a sketch on a 1/2 sheet of free draw paper. USe MANY LINES AND PATTERNS TO SHOW TEXTURE.

  2. Place your sketch on top of the black Scratch Art paper. trace all your pencil lines TO TRANSFER YOUR DESIGN.

  3. Remove the white sketch paper.

  4. Use a wooden pin tool to “etch” YOUR DESIGN.

  5. Write your name and code on the back of your project with a marker or sharpie WHEN COMPLETE.

Variations:

The drawings below are examples of a technique for using crayons.

This technique is often called crayon etching.

Make your own Scratch Art paper at home!

Follow the steps below:

  1. Choose a piece of light colored paper.

  2. color the whole paper with black crayon. Press very hard.

  3. black should cover the entire piece of colored paper.

  4. Use a paper clip or another object with a point to scratch away the black crayon to show the color paper below.

You can create different kinds of lines, textures and patterns.

If you want to change your etched lines, color them out with black crayon and scratch new lines.

Instead of covering the first layer of wax with black crayon, use dark colors of tempera paint to which a drop of liquid soap has been added.

After paint is dry, etch through paint to the wax surface.
