A student your age drew the pictures you see below.
They drew pictures to explain how things can move and change.
The girl that drew these pictures is a good swimmer.
She drew four pictures to show the motion in a good dive.
Artists that make pictures like this are called illustrators.
An illustration is a picture that explains something.
Some illustrators are cartoonists.
They draw funny pictures or comic strips.
Look at the cartoons shown below.
How did the cartoonist show change and motion?
Think of other things that move and change.
Look at examples on Artsonia from last year’s class.
Think of an original idea.
Original art is your own work.
It is not copied!

Film and Video:
1. Research artists who create animated (cartoon) films. Animation is made by taking many still pictures of a subject. When the pictures are shown quickly, the eye sees a continuous motion.
Research Animation and find your new favorite cartoon or cartoonist!
2. Make a Flip Book. Staple together 8 or more pieces of paper from a small note pad. Staple the top like a small book. On each page draw one image which is part of an action sequence. Flip the pages rapidly with your thumb. You should be able to see the illusion of motion.
