3 Little Pigs!

This week we wrapped up our theme of “The 3 Little Pigs”. It was super fun. We got to play in the housekeeping corner with masks and pretend to be the 3 little pigs and the wolf, building houses and blowing them over. Huffing and puffing can make us tired! We also spent some time working on the letter P, and we thought of lots of words that began and sounded like the letter P. We played with Pink playdoh and made Miss Peggy cards (P is for Peggy!) to help her feel better. Overall, we had a great week! See attached pictures below!

Camping

This week we will take time to explore all the benefits of camping.  This is Miss Fiona’s favorite thing in the whole wide world!!  She has kindly put up her tent in the housekeeping area with a fire pit ready to go for all the kiddos to explore.  She is an expert in this area as she was a camp counselor who took a group of girls kayaking up in the Georgian Bay for 21 days.  Talk about an expert! We will pretend to roast marshmallows, look at the stars and make a camp fire for art.  At the end of the week we will have s’mores for snack.  Such a fun week.  The kiddos will love it!

A Few Notes:

Just a reminder that the second quarter has ended and we will be sending home progress notes for those children who receive them quarterly.  We are also in the process of thinking about next year’s classes.  We will be having our Spring screening for role models in early March.  Date to be announced.  If you know anyone who has a child that you think would be a wonderful role model for the DAP class, please share your experiences with them and have them send one of the teachers an email with their interest.  We are always looking for strong role models.

If the district is closed due to inclement weather, DAP is closed as well.  Also just a reminder that Miss Fiona will be taking over Miss Peggy’s class while she is our recovering from surgery.  If you have any concerns or questions you can email her at fhorning@fairview.k12.oh.us

Happy Camping!!

Aaarrr you ready for Pirate week?

Pirate week is always special.  We will make pirate hand prints, play pirate bingo and make our own treasure chests.  The sensory table will be filled with pirate bootie and the kids will get to pretend to be pirates!   It will be so much fun using our imaginations and pretending to be something we are not.

Miss Fiona will be assisting in the afternoons until she takes over the classroom full time on January 25th.

Ms. Fiona

Hello DAP community!

Just writing a quick blurb to introduce myself further and extend the floor to any questions/comments/concerns for the upcoming months as Ms. Peggy prepares for her hip surgery. I will start in DAP on the 25th of January and be in DAP as the lead teacher for approximately 12 weeks as Ms. Peggy recovers. I have completed my student teaching hours for Cleveland State in the DAP classroom, and am therefore already familiar with the kids and all of their needs. I cannot wait to be back downstairs full time for a couple of weeks and continue working with this great group of students! Please do not hesitate to reach out to me regarding any issues, comments, or concerns within that time. I look forward to conversing with all of you further, and Happy New Year!

-Miss Fiona

Welcome to 2016!

Happy New Year!

This month we will have four themes that the children will use their imaginations and create their own play around castles and dragons, pirates, camping, and The Three Little Pigs.  Play in a child’s world is their work, according to Piaget.  Offering an opportunity for children to play and create their own characters also increases their ability to read later on.   Using imagination in play helps a child develop the ability to see characters and plots once they begin to read.  It is amazing what play can do for all of our children.

Here is a fun story about a dragon to get us all ready for the week.  Enjoy.

Winter is here!

The Gingerbread Man

This week we will be reading The Gingerbread Man.  All of our activities for the week will surround the story.  We will have gingerbread play doh, a baking center in the housekeeping area and make gingerbread boys!  It will be a fun week.  Don’t forget to practice your songs for the Winter Concert on Thursday evening December 17th at 7 PM.  It is such fun to see all of the children perform on stage.

Community Helpers/Construction workers

Community Helpers:  The focus of the unit is that children will learn about the role of the community in their lives and the importance of good citizenship!

This week we will be learning about construction workers, their tools and trucks.  We will add some Thanksgiving activities into the week as well.  The sensory table will be filled with diggers, trucks and logs.  If you walk by the room you may hear pounding hammers in the housekeeping corner.  Real wood, hammers and nails, safety googles too!  We may be building boats or bird houses along with making turkeys.  It is guaranteed to be a fun filled week!

Next week the is NO SCHOOL for the district students as we will be having conferences.  If you have not scheduled one, please call as soon as possible.  Our time slots are filling up!!

We wish you all a Happy Thanksgiving filled with family, friendship and food.

Community Helpers-Fireman

Community Helpers:  The focus of the unit is that children will learn about the role of the community in their lives and the importance of good citizenship!

This week for our unit on Community Helpers,we will be learning about the Fireman and how they take care of us in our neighborhood.  We will have a visit from Mr. Adam Shulte who works for the Elyria Fire Dept.  He will share with all the children what he wears, how he handles a fire and how children can protect themselves from getting hurt in fire.  It should be very fun to see a real fireman.

Thank you Sesame Street for this iconic video on Community Helpers.

Community Helpers

Community Helpers:  The focus of the unit is that children will learn about the role of the community in their lives and the importance of good citizenship!

The first week of our unit on Community Helpers we will learn about the Post Office.  We will transform the housekeeping area in a Post Office and encourage the children toUSPS2 pretend to be Postal Workers.  While playing in the Post Office the children will take turns selling and buying stamps, boxes and sending packages.  The children will practice stuffing (great two handed activity using  both sides of the brain), and addressing envelopes.

During the week, you may want to take your child to the Post Office and have them see what a real post office is about.  Attached is a video about going to the Post Office.  For the younger children you may want to stop at 2:50.  The video is lengthy.  The afternoon children may like to see the rest of the video as they will see what happens at a Post Office behind the scene.

We will also send a letter from school to our homes so that the children can actually receive a letter that they sent.

This week we will be stepping away from the curriculum and enjoy some silly, fun and gooey halloween antics.silly and rediculoushalloween-decorations
