Do you see a face?

This painting is an example of fantasy art or surrealism.

The artist has combined two very different ideas.

They make one imaginary scene that you can see in two ways.

Look at the pictures above. Both are paintings by artists.

What ideas do they combine in their paintings?

What parts of each painting look unreal?

The photograph below shows a sculpture that combine several very different parts.

Where have you seen fantasy art?

There are many kinds of fantasy art.

All of these artworks have double images.

One image is a face or part of a face.

The other is a landscape, a room, a sky and many machines.

Think of some very different ideas that you could combine into one imaginary picture.

Using Your Imagination: Fantasy Art

Try to create a surrealist or fantasy ARTWORK with a double image. CLICK HERE TO SEE SOME STUDENT SAMPLES.

1. Make a list of realistic subjects that you might draw. (animals, buildings, cars, eyes, fish, guitars, shoes, trees, etc.)

2. Choose two items and combine them into a fantasy ARTWORK USING drawing or collage. (a fish shaped like a shoe, or a shoe shaped like a fish, etc.)

3. sketch 1 of the realistic subjects from your list.

4. After you have the first drawing, try one of these techniques:

  • look at the drawing upside down and sideways to see if you get a new idea.

  • fill in all the blank space with a different subject (face filled with landscape, bricks, or a field of flowers).

  • randomly draw another subject on top of the first one and then try to combine them.

5. Complete your fantasy art project using whatever tools and materials you choose.
