Mixing Colors: Secondary and Intermediate

 

The color wheel will help you remember important ideas about mixing colors.

  • Primary colors are red, yellow and blue. You can mix other colors from them.

  • Secondary colors are orange, green and violet. These colors are created by mixing two primary colors.

  • Intermediate or tertiary colors are yellow-orange, yellow-green, red-violet, red-orange, blue-violet, blue-green. All these can be mixed from primary colors.

  • Related colors are next to each other on the color wheel. For example, blue, blue-violet and violet are related colors.

Color mixing: Secondary and Intermediate

1. Practice mixing paint to create secondary and intermediate colors. Make three sets of related colors; oranges, greens and violets.

2. Begin each set with 3 circles of paint. Add dots of color to the circles.

3. To mix the colors, brush the dots of paint so the colors blend together.

4. Remember to WASH, WIPE and BLOT your brush every time you change colors.
