Painting: Ways to Use Paint

Today you will use TEMPeRA paint.

There are many techniques for using paint.

A technique is a way to do something very well.

Artists learn techniques so they can express ideas and feelings in artwork.

Study the examples of painting techniques in the image below.

Before you start your final painting, let’s practice.

Use a sheet of thick drawing paper for practice.

See if you can discover some new painting techniques.

Practice – Painting: Ways to Use Paint

1. Practice different brush strokes you can make.

2. Practice washing, wiping, blotting and dipping your brush.

3. Practice the three techniques shown above in the example.

  • thick paint with wet brush

  • thick paint with a dry brush

  • thin watery paint on wet paper (wet-on-wet)

Project – Painting: Ideas and Feelings

  1. Think of something to paint that shows an idea, feeling or emotion.

  2. Search for your idea, feeling or emotion on Google Images for inspiration.

  3.  sketch out your idea on a piece of thick painting paper OR USE THE SKETCHES SCHOOL APP ON YOUR IPAD. 

  4. Create a painting using line, shapes and patterns appropriate to your idea, feeling or emotion.

  5. UPLOAD AN IMAGE OF YOUR ARTWORK TO SEESAW AND ARTSONIA.

Clean-up

1. Take your painting on cardboard to the drying rack.

2. Take your paint palette back to the countertop.

3. Take your brushes and water dish and place them in the sink.

4. Remove all other items from the table.

5. wipe off table with a sponge and dry with paper towels.
