Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

Our next unit is all about the 3 R’s Reduce, Reuse, Recycle!!!  We will be talking about Earth Day tomorrow and ways we can save the Earth.  This unit we will be very busy: we will be sorting recyclables, making our own Earth out of paper mache, making our own paper out of shredded paper, cleaning up liter around the school yard, and of course the kids favorite part is putting dirt and worms in the sensory table just to name a few. This week we will be reviewing the letters F, G, H, I, and J.  Our books this week are The three R’s: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle by Nuria Roca and Why should I recycle written by Jen Green.

Last week of ball study

This is our last week of our ball study.  Our questions for the week include; what sport have you played that use a ball, what animals play with balls and finally, do heavy balls bounce ? The children have enjoyed playing with a variety of balls and sports this unit.  We have golfed, played balloon tennis, creating ramps to see which items will roll down the ramps and finally painting with many different balls.

This week the story is the fable, Three Billy Goats Gruff, and the story Play Ball.  Our Math unit is patterning and we will begin our review of the letters in the alphabet with A,B,C,D,E.

Reminder:  This week is a three day week as DAP will be closed on Thursday, giving the staff the opportunity to go to the Ohio Association for the Education of Young Children conference.  This is an great way our staff can learn new things together.   We will return on Monday our new unit Reduce, Reuse and Recycle!!

What is inside of balls?

what it inside a soccer ball?

Our questions for the week are:

Can you make a ball?  What do you think is inside these balls? Do you think a bubble is a ball? and Can this ball be opened?  Each day the students are asked one of these questions regarding balls.  It is fun to see what they think the answer will be?  We then add up each group of answers to see which group (yes/no)has the most or least.

We will explore balls by looking inside baseballs, popping bubbles that are the shape of balls, looking inside a soccer ball and making predictions on what is inside a variety of balls.  For math we will be sorting,  we will be painting with balls of ice and beginning our projects for the art show.  We will read a Ball for Daisy and Balls.

This is one of the stories we will read this week?  It is a picture book about A Red Ball for Daisy.  It will be fun for the students to write their own words for the book.  See if your student can tell the story by looking at the pictures.

Balls study continued…….

This week we will be picking up with our balls study.  We will be investigating what and how they are made. With opening day for the Indians this week we will be reading books about baseball and Spring as well (hopefully the weather will cooperate and we will be able to get outside soon!!) .  Our letters this week are W and X.  Math we will be introducing early concepts of addition and subtraction.
