Here is a video of instructions on how Juniors should be selecting classes in Powerschool. You will also need to complete the blue scheduling form and turn it in to Mrs. Merrill by Friday, March 4th. If you have any questions, please stop and see me! I’m here to help:)
Seniors: It is that time of year when you should be working on scholarship applications. There are many scholarships out there and money to be found, but you have to do the work! Check out the Scholarships/Financial Aid tab on the School Counseling page of the district website. Those are direct links to the scholarship applications. If you have any questions or need copies of your transcripts, stop down and see me:)
I had the opportunity to get into the classroom and work with the juniors on Naviance. We took a tour of the site and all it has to offer, and then we spent some time taking the Strengths Explorer. The Strengths Explorer is a quick, 78 question survey that taps into the students’ strengths. Once the students complete the survey, they can research careers that are related to those strengths. It is a great introduction into career searching! I encourage you to complete the strengths explorer if you haven’t already, or come see me if you did not get your Naviance account info so we can get you started! Parents, ask your kids to show you Naviance and all of the amazing things it has to offer!
November is Ohio College Application Month! The goal is to get every high school senior to fill out at least one college application! In honor of Ohio College Application Month, I will be holding “College Apps and Coffee” on Wednesday, November 11th during 0 period in the Red Room across from the counseling office. Students can come in and get assistance with their college apps and Common App/Naviance and get any questions answered. I will provide coffee and snacks for those that come for help:)
If you are in need of taking an OGT test, they will be given the week of October 26th-October 31st. You will get a pass from the counseling office letting you know when and where you will be testing. If you have any questions, stop and see me:)
Hey guys (and gals):) I am glad to see that some of you have taken the plunge with me and have entered schools into your Naviance account as “Colleges I’ve applied to”. That is awesome! Don’t forget, you need to request your transcripts two ways: 1) in Naviance there is a place to request them, and 2) in the counseling office you need to fill out a blue half sheet. This will let me know that you are ready for me to send materials for you. Also, please provide me with a resume or list of all the things that you do in and out of school. I like to make my recommendation letters personalized as much as I can, so anything that you can tell me that I might not know about you would be appreciated. You can just email me that information:) If you have any questions, please stop down and ask!
Here is the document I handed out at the Senior Seminar that goes over application procedures with Naviance. Come see me if you need help:)
Attention Juniors and Sophomores:
The PSAT will be given at FHS on Wednesday, October 14th. This is the Preliminary SAT, so it is a great way to practice for the SAT and ACT (which you will begin taking as juniors in the Spring). This is also the test that qualifies current juniors for National Merit status. Please bring a check for $15 (made out to Fairview High School) to Mrs. Merrill in the counseling office. We have a limited number of tests, so don’t wait!
Read here to see why you should take the PSAT:)
