Arthur Dove mixed many light colors of paint to create a picture about a sunrise.

Light colors are called tints.

Practice

Practice the dot mixing system shown above on a piece of scrap paper.

  1. Mix three tints (beginning with white).

  2. Mix three shades (beginning with any color).

  3. Remember to wash, wipe and blot your brush.

Painting: Mixing Tints and Shades

Apply what you have learned to CREATE A MASTERPIECE!

1. Choose a type of:

  • place

  • weather

  • time of day

  • mood or action

2. Search for your 4 words on Google Images for inspiration.

3. Sketch out your idea. (GET A CANVAS FROM THE TEACHER)

4. Make sure to include at least 1 tint and 1 shade in your painting.

  • A tint is white plus any color.

  • A shade is any color plus black.

Extensions

Art and Science: Go outside and create drawings of clouds, trees and other natural forms using crayons, chalk or oil pastels. Observe and record the very small differences in lightness and darkness of the forms.
