Lines and Shapes: Pictures with a Message

There are many kinds of lines and shapes.

A line is the path created by a moving point.

Curved lines can make shapes. The shapes have curved edges.

Can you name these shapes? They all have curved edges.

Artists create lines and shapes to send you messages.

A Japanese artist added smooth curves to create this picture.

Kiyotada. Woman Dancer. 1708. The Metropolitan Museum of Art. New York.

The curves send us a message about graceful motions.

Can you create graceful curved motions with your body?

Straight lines can make shapes with straight edges.

Find some shapes with straight edges.

These shapes have straight edges. Can you name them?

This picture shows a Japanese actor dressed up as a fierce warrior.

Kiyotada. Actor. 1715. Metropolitan Museum of Art. New York.

The straight lines and shapes send us a message about strong motions.

Move your body like this actor might.

Can you create a picture that sends a message?

What lines and shapes will you use?

Visualize: Pretend you want to create a drawing of airplanes zooming through the air. Make motions in the air showing the planes zipping through the sky.

What other things can you imagine?

  • …a grasshopper hopping?
  • …a caterpillar  walking?
  • …a butterfly flittering?
  • …a cloud floating?
  • …a snake slithering?
