In order to help prepare your child for the upcoming OAA tests, we are assigning 10 minutes nightly of math and reading. Anything additional would be helpful. We will occasionally have time in school to work on this. We will be making contests for the month of April to encourage the students to do their best. Please contact us with any questions. Thank you for your support!
It’s hard to believe that we are already in the last grading period for the year!! As part of the process of increasing the level of responsibility of my students, as well as preparing them for fifth grade, I will be implementing a new grading system for classwork and homework. This will be based on students getting their work in by the due date. We have had numerous occasions the previous three grading periods where I had to extend due dates or keep students in to complete late work. Beyond extenuating circumstances such as absence due to illness or family emergency, I will not be continuing with extended due dates. In addition I will not be keeping students in at lunch and recess, other than my OSI students I meet with. Students will be held accountable for any turning in any work missed due to vacation days when they return from vacation. The policy for fourth grading period will be as follows. If any work is one day late, it will be at least 25% off of the final grade. Two days will be at least 50% off. Three days will be at least 75% off. After four days, the student is still responsible for completing the assignment, but she/he will not receive credit. My goal is to instill a greater level of responsibility in all of my students in their preparation for the rest of their academic career. Students are aware of the routine and expectations in my classroom, and I feel they will rise to the challenge I am giving them in our final grading period of 2013-2014. Please have a conversation with your child relaying my fourth quarter expectations. Thank you for your time and support as we make our final push for the year!!
The following information was posted on EDMODO for students today due to a continuous misuse of the computers and computer applications in the fourth grade:
ANY STUDENT WHO HAS CHANGED THEIR EDMODO NAME TO SOMETHING DIFFERENT THAN THEIR FIRST NAME AND FIRST INITIAL OF LAST NAME NEEDS TO CHANGE IT BACK TO FIRST NAME, FIRST INITIAL OF LAST NAME THIS MORNING. FAILURE TO DUE SO WILL RESULT IN LOSS OF COMPUTER PRIVILEGES FOR THE REMAINDER OF THE SCHOOL YEAR. REMINDER THAT EDMODO AND GOOGLE DOCS ARE NOT TO BE USED AS PERSONAL CHAT ROOMS. IF NECESSARY, WE WILL SHUT DOWN USE OF COMPUTERS FOR THE WHOLE FOURTH GRADE THE REMAINDER OF THE SCHOOL YEAR.
Please remind your child that computer use is a privilege, not a right, and that the whole grade is in jeopardy of losing that privilege for the remainder of the year. In addition to improper chat rooms, there are a few students who think it is entertaining to switch the keys on the keyboards. This damages the computers, and any student caught doing this will be charged for the repairs. We want to have use of the great technology offered in our district, and many students are not aware that we have more technology to use than most school districts. We are hoping for no further issues, as this is the most we have had to address computer issues since we integrated technology at Gilles-Sweet. Thank you for your time.

Please make sure that you are logging onto PowerSchool and checking your child’s progress at least once a week. Ideally, logging on Tuesdays and Wednesdays would be best. We have many students with missing assignments, and we would like to be able to grade them. This week, Mr. Schulenberg and Mrs. Schirhart are helping students with missing work during lunch/recess. Notes were sent home last Friday for parents to read, sign, and return. If you did not receive one and are not sure if you should have, feel free to e-mail Mr. Schulenberg, and he will let you know. His e-mail is firstname.lastname@example.org. After Friday of this week, any missing work will be graded as is. Thank you for your time.

Just a reminder that we will have our Valentine’s Day party Friday afternoon. Children may bring in Valentines to give out, but it is not a requirement. More news to come about Friday.
Hello Families of the Fourth Grade Triad,
As we come to the end of the second grading period and start of third grading period, please be sure to re-stock your child with some of the basic supplies for school. This includes pencils, highlighters, notecards, etc. In addition, all students need to have headphones, especially for computer class. This item was listed on the supply list for the beginning of the school year and is utilized in many of their classes. We will be having the privilege of going to Playhouse Square on Wednesday, January 29th from 9:00 a.m.-12:00p.m. Permission slips and the $5.00 fee are due Friday January 24th. Students are to wear dress clothes, and no jeans please. Thank you for your time and enjoy the upcoming four-day weekend!!

Please make sure that your child has a pair of headphones for school. They are needed in Science and when the students go to the computer lab, and may be needed in other classes throughout the year. Five Below has both the over-the-ear and earbud types of headphones for, you guessed it, $5 or below=) Consider buying two or three sets from Five Below, so your child has a backup pair just in case.
We have created this site to help with all the technology that is being used in fourth grade. Please visit at least weekly. The daily agenda and homework can be found here as well as other helpful information.
Below is a tutorial/tour of the blog.
